Reading Syllabus

In 8th grade, we build background knowledge for future learning by using a variety of fiction and nonfiction cross-curricular texts. TEKS objectives are a central part of this instruction. Students are expected to work independently, and apply higher level thinking skills as they interpret, critique, and analyze text in increasingly more challenging contexts. Students will be researching, writing speeches and debate cases, and in some cases, writing bills and playing the role of senators during Student Congress sessions. In the Spring, we will use reading strategies to study the decades of the 20th century within their historical contexts. We will also review grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, story elements, and figurative language as we read and write fiction and nonfiction works throughout the year. High school English and Social Studies teachers have reported that this class sets Bradley students apart from their peers.

Students will learn to independently:

  • Evaluate printed, spoken, visual and electronic sources of information.
  • Analyze historical and contemporary events and interpret how they currently affect citizens of the United States and the world.
  • Research and formulate arguments on both sides of important issues, and present their positions in speech and debate formats.
  • Role-play the process of legislators introducing and arguing the passage of bills or resolutions using parliamentary procedure.
  • Learn selected Greek and Latin roots and their derivatives.  

Grades will be earned as follows:        

Daily Assignments Average = 40%

Quiz Average = 25%

Test/Project Average = 35%

Assignments will be turned in during class on their due dates.  An immediate 20% reduction will be taken for late work.  Assignments will not be accepted after the material has been assessed or the three week grading period ends, whichever comes first.

Make Up Work:  One day per day of absence will be granted.

Students will need the following:

A Reading section in their binder or folder, notebook paper, pen or pencil, highlighters (optional), colored markers or pencils (optional)

1 box of tissues for classroom use

A composition book for writing exercises

Class Rules:

Do the right thing!

Be on time, seated and ready to work when the bell rings.

Listen to and follow instructions.

Work diligently during class.

Be respectful and honest, with yourself and others.
