“This will help in a big way to help me get to where I want to be,” said senior Jordan Jackson.
Jackson is headed to St. Edwards University next year to pursue a journalism degree. Delaune passed away last year at the age of 88. He spent six decades in journalism. He was the first person to report that President John F. Kennedy had been assassinated. He spent nearly 30 years at KENS 5 covering current events, features and sports. But his true passion was the 40-plus years he spent covering NEISD football, basketball and baseball games, calling it “the last bastion of sports purity.”
Like Delaune, Jackson is passionate about covering high school sports and current events. Delaune’s son and daughter were on hand and said their late father would be proud to see Jackson receiving the scholarship because of his passion for both.
Also on hand for the announcement was NEISD athletic public address announcer Lon Oakley and Delaune’s long-time friend Richard Oliver.
