Navy anchors down at Oak Grove

Oak Grove and Navy reps sign charter agreement

The United States Navy officially put an anchor down in the Oak Grove Elementary School community.

Representatives from Oak Grove and the Navy signed a charter for the Military Adopt a School Program today. With the signing, each entity pledged to support each other however they can. For Oak Grove, that means Navy sailors will volunteer their time and resources to mentor students and help at school and community functions.

“We’re known as the little school with the big heart and everything we do here is because we truly love our kids,” said Oak Grove Principal Rocio Gutierrez-Ochoa. “In our mission statement, we talk about our kids being college, career and community ready. This is going to be a huge positive presence on our campus. It really does make a difference.”

Oak Grove is a proud Purple Star campus. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) gives this distinction to schools that excel in meeting the needs of military students and their families.

This Navy partnership will help nurture relationships across Oak Grove, but especially in its Student 2 Student (S2S) program. Our S2S program connects civilian students with newly enrolled military children to help ease the transition of being the “new kid” at school. They tour the campus together, eat lunch together and answer questions that come with moving to a new place.
