Wood Wranglers dribble while they dance

Wood Wrangles Dance Team

In its fifth year at Wood Middle School, the Wrangler Dancers are 140 strong. More than half of Andrea Arevalo’s dance students are also in the athletic program. As she was brainstorming for the next halftime performance, she decided to combine basketball and dance into one epic cross-curricular routine.

“Here at Wood, we encourage our students to become involved in multiple sports, fine arts classes and student groups,” said Arevalo. “Middle school is the perfect time for students to get involved and find their passion. Since my dancers are currently in basketball season, I thought it would be a great idea to incorporate their basketball skills into one of our dance routines.”

Arevalo worked with girls athletic coaches Laura Coggins and Selena Ramos to find the right drills and skills to mix into the choreography. Students win when lessons are engaging and fun. Arevalo’s idea to combine basketball and dance accomplished all that and more.

“The dribble and dance mode for this group made this such a fun routine to remember,” said Arevalo. “Their hard work and persistence were all worth it as we listened to the cheers from the stands during their halftime performance.”
