STEAM Family Night has become a February tradition at Wilderness Oak Elementary School.
“STEAM Night is a fun-filled evening, where, as a community, we celebrate science, technology, engineering, art, and math with hands-on activities that spark learning and curiosity,” said Gifted and Talented (GT) teacher Suzanne Horan. “Here at Wilderness Oak, we achieve this by working together as a whole. Every grade level and staff member are involved in making the night a success for our children.”
STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. It’s something Horan embraces in her classroom every single day. Her lessons and projects merge the “right brain” and “left brain” tendencies within every student. While it’s a worthy challenge, it’s also an opportunity to further strengthen their foundation in core subjects while thinking outside of the box.
The third annual STEAM Family Night at Wilderness Oak gave fifth graders the chance to share their science fair projects and inventions with their family, friends and teachers. It also gave students the chance to create something of their own, whether it be building with LEGOs, designing snowflakes, crafting paper airplanes and much more.
