A school year brings new opportunities for new teachers
New opportunities for new teachers.
That was the focus of New Teacher Orientation at Johnson High School on Monday. North East ISD is welcoming nearly 400 new teachers to District this year. Some are coming to work at NEISD excited to be a teacher for the first time. Others joined to take advantage of unique opportunities like Alejandro Johnson, who will teach English to refugee students at Jackson Middle School.
“This is a unique program, and I am really looking forward to it,” said Johnson.
During the nearly weeklong training, new teachers learn about the NEISD culture, the resources available to them and how to approach various aspects of teaching. In addition, the North East Educational Foundation (NEEF) handed out $7,500 in gift cards to help teachers with supplies as they get started.
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Sean Maika stressed the importance of building relationships with students during his welcome message to the new teachers.
“Kids don’t learn if you don’t build a relationship with them,” said Maika.
It’s a lesson not lost on first-year teacher Sydney Gray.
She is going to be teaching special education for kindergarten through second-grade students at Larkspur Elementary School.
“I am super excited. They are coming in new. I am coming in new. So it’s going to be really great starting together,” said Gray. “I want to show them that they can lead and move forward and achieve great things.”
