Driscoll students connect with Brookdale residents
A sense of community is ingrained in Driscoll Middle School students. Character matters and librarian Jessica Carver is always looking for new ways her students can collaborate with community members. Residents at the Jones-Maltsberger Brookdale Senior Living Center have mostly been without visitors since the COVID-19 pandemic, so the school saw this as a great opportunity.
Carver and PALS teacher Heidi Curry arranged for Driscoll students to connect with Brookdale residents over Zoom. Students prepared poems and read them to the residents, who shared their own stories and advice for the teens in return. Some residents and students bonded over a mutual hobby - crocheting.
"It was truly an exciting and sweet meeting that touched our hearts as much as theirs," said Carver. "It was a wonderful experience for the students, and I think for the residents too."
Driscoll students are focused on forging meaningful connections #theNEISDway, regardless of the obstacles in their way.
