The North East ISD Council of PTAs is dedicated to meeting every family's needs across the District, no matter the circumstances. It opened the Clothes Closet in 2017 to provide students in need with free, new and gently-used clothing. Many changes were implemented as the COVID-19 pandemic shut down campuses. As families struggled to make ends meet, Clothes Closet Chair Angie Ogawa found a way to serve her community and keep the Clothes Closet doors open.
"We knew the need was going to be there no matter what," said Ogawa. "One thing we added that's been so helpful is a donation bin outside of the Clothes Closet. Now donations can be made at any time, even when we aren't open."
Ogawa says the addition of a donation bin has been a game changer and gives donors the flexibility to drop off items whenever it's convenient for them. Another new, contactless donation option comes in the form of an Amazon Wish List. This allows supporters to purchase in-need items online and have them shipped directly to the Clothes Closet.
The Clothes Closet has pivoted to serving families by appointment to limit the number of shoppers inside the building and encourage social distancing. Priority is given to families of Title 1 schools every Wednesday and select Saturdays. If you'd like to learn more about visiting the Clothes Closet, please contact your campus family specialist.
