Wetmore Elementary School is giving back to its neighbors with a little help from its Little Free Library. What’s normally reserved for books is now a holding place for community members to donate or pick up non-perishable items like pasta, beans, or canned goods. After seeing a similar post online, Principal Catherine Leach empowered Wetmore’s leadership team to turn the library into a Little Free Food Bank.
Counselor Heather Redding believes this small gesture could provide comfort for many.
“It’s a little eerie when you go into the grocery store right now and the aisles are empty,” said Redding. “If you do need something like pasta, it’s here. We’re going to add some toilet paper in there soon. It’s been an easy and simple way to give back.”
The giving spirit is alive and well at Wetmore. Several members of the leadership team and staff have stepped up and donated many of the items in the temporary food bank.
“We put the donation box in the front where people can donate, while still practicing social distancing,” said Redding. “We’ve had family that are getting their lunch drop off food as well. We’re trying to have some essentials available for our community, whether they go to Wetmore or not.”
If you’re interested in donating, you can place your items in the drop off box outside the front doors of the school. The Little Free Food Bank is located by the bus drop off loop and is open to anyone in need.
