It takes a strong level of commitment and dedication to be a member of Roosevelt High School’s Science Olympiad Team. It’s a mentally grueling contest that quizzes students on a wide variety of topics, from anatomy to physiology, math, geography and more. In addition to the competition itself, weekend tournaments often mean early mornings for the students and their sponsors.
“We checked into the competition at 6 a.m. and went to our room to wait for each of our events to start,” said junior Brennan Sierra. “Once it was time, we got with our partner or team and went to a specific room to take a test or build a model depending on what event we were doing."
The Rough Rider team finished first out of all teams from San Antonio and ninth overall at a meet in Pflugerville on Saturday, Feb. 1. Three JROTC cadets are part of the team and contributed to the Geologic Mapping portion of this contest thanks to the knowledge they gained from the program’s Orienteering team.
Orienteering is a cross country and land navigation team that challenges cadets to find a number of points with a map and compass in a certain order.
