Oak Meadow students kick off local fitness challenge

“I think it’s pretty cool that we get a chance to see the mayor at Oak Meadow.”

Third-grade, Sign Club member Zoey captured the sentiment felt all over Oak Meadow Elementary School. The halls were buzzing, ready for a special visit by San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg.

The event was made even more special with the help of the Churchill High school Drumline and Charger Cheerleaders. The Oak Meadow Gym was full of wide-eyed students ready to meet the big kids and the mayor. It wasn’t hard to get moving, and that’s exactly why Mayor Nirenberg was stopping by. This event kicked-off the annual It’s Time Texas Community Challenge. It’s a challenge San Antonio, and Oak Meadow, continues to win.

Oak Meadow Principal Lisa Campos says a big change can start with a small habit.

“Anything from drinking more water to walks in the park,” said Campos. “We start our day here with our Fit Club. It was really nice having the mayor here leading us in exercises.”

Mayor Nirenberg emphasized how the students at Oak Meadow can make a change that impacts the entire community.

“It also allows a student to go home, demonstrate those by example to the rest of the family,” said Nirenberg. “A student here in school learning those kinds of skills and habits impacts their family and those families impact an entire community.”
