Ukulele Club connects Bulverde Creek teachers

It's not unusual to hear the sound of strumming ukuleles filtering through the halls of Bulverde Creek Elementary School. But it’s not students playing their hearts out in music class, it’s the teachers.

Music teachers Amanda Morris and Chelsea Short lead the faculty Ukulele Club every Monday afternoon. The Ukulele Club has become so much more than an opportunity for the Bulverde Creek team to get to know one another through new chords and songs. Their weekly jam sessions have turned into valuable stress relief.

“Using the Calm app or meditation has the same goal: to clear your mind,” said Deb Valdez, fifth-grade teacher. “Ukulele does that. You stop thinking about the to-do list, stop thinking about that kid, and stop thinking about grading. It’s also easy to play with more than one person because it hides mistakes and it’s better with more than just me.”

New ukulele skills have also translated into a fun way for teachers to incorporate music into their classrooms. The Ukulele Club is in the middle of practicing for a schoolwide sing-along on Dec. 20, so the whole school can enjoy the music.
