LEE’s Calvin Lu named Cadet of the Year

Joining the JROTC program at LEE High School has been a transformative experience for junior Calvin Lu. On Tuesday, May 14, he was named the 2018-2019 North East ISD Cadet of the Year in front of his entire battalion. Lu has big dreams of entering one of the U.S. Service Academies after high school, and he knows that joining the JROTC program at LEE laid the roadmap for his future.

“I know when I first walked in as a freshman I was shy and I was maybe 100 pounds, and I had no solid leadership skills at all,” said Lu. “Learning how to lead my peers is something I’ll be able to carry with me through the rest of my life. One day I want to be a general and I know it all started here at LEE.”

While Lu may have had the spotlight during the ceremony, he knows he couldn't accomplish anything without his support system of cadets and leaders at LEE.

“My favorite part of being in JROTC is the people,” said Lu. “I’ve met the most amazing kids here. I’ve been able to experience all different types of people who come from all different walks of life and see them grow and to grow alongside them has been a thrill.”

North East ISD JROTC officials also handed out the coveted Superintendent’s Trophy during dual ceremonies on Tuesday, May 14. The tight race between LEE and Roosevelt High Schools ended in a rare tie. That means the Superintendent’s Trophy will be shared between both campuses over the next school year. Roosevelt's CyberPatriot and San Juan Guard Armed Drill teams were also honored during their ceremony.

Congratulations to all of our NEISD cadets!
