Investigating Careers #theNEISDway

Students build structures and fashion outfits

Picking a potential career path can be a difficult decision. The new Investigating Careers course at Eisenhower Middle School is making it easy.

Investigating Careers is a Career and Technical Education (CTE) elective that students can opt to take. At Eisenhower, it’s a big hit thanks to teacher Kara Leyva. She helps make exploring careers in a variety of industries a whole lot of fun.

One of their most recent areas of study was Fashion and Design. To get the full experience, students studied how fashion has changed throughout the decades, sketched their own designs and created their own clothing line. They even showed off their work in a fashion show.

A student tries on a shirt for the fashion show“Students had only 30 minutes and limited supplies to create a look,” said Leyva. “The students had a blast and filled different rolls such as fashion designer, buyer, model and sales associate. After the fashion show concluded, IKE students, families and teachers donated a total of four bags of clothes and shoes to the local Goodwill.”

They also became architects for a day during their ‘Building Day’ lesson that explored architecture and construction career options. The Makerspace lesson challenged them to design and construct a parking garage with index cards. Another challenge had them building an elevated bridge with straws, scissors and tape and building the tallest structure they could out of marshmallows and toothpicks.

If your child wants to take this course, ask your counselor if it’s available during course selection for the 2023 – 2024 school year.
