Humpty Dumpty had a great fall at Huebner Elementary School. Luckily, kindergarten students were there to put Humpty back together again during an egg drop challenge curated by librarian Natalie Watts.
Students were tasked with creating a device to prevent their egg from cracking after a short drop. They had everything from tape to Styrofoam cups, newspaper, bubble wrap and sponges to craft the egg-saving device. Fourth graders stepped in to help each group of kinder students plan, design and assemble the vessel.
Watts is always looking for opportunities to incorporate STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) into her lesson plans. And the egg drop challenge was the perfect fit for the Mother Goose unit.
"I believe that even our youngest students can benefit from STEM instruction that incorporates the 4 Cs of the 21st century - communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity," said Watts. "Starting with a kinder appropriate concept, such as nursery rhymes, students are working on these critical, life-long skills while having fun and staying engaged. They don't even realize how much higher-level thinking they are doing as they solve Humpty's problem!"
