Caleb and nathan with trophies and text

Join us in saying buena suerte (good luck) to two North East ISD students who are preparing to compete at the National Spanish Spelling Bee!

Caleb Caro and Nathan Martinez will compete against some of the top spellers in the nation June 26-27 in El Paso. Both students have dedicated countless hours studying thousands of words and practicing with their families who are rooting them on every step of the way.

Caleb was a fifth grader at Coker Elementary School when he won first overall at the Region 20 contest, securing his spot at nationals. He’s excited to get on stage and compete this summer before he heads to Bradley Middle School in August.

“I’m feeling nervous but also kind of confident, because I’ve studied a lot,” said Caleb. “My mom really helps me study the list. I study as hard as I can, and then she tests me and helps me practice.”

Nathan was an eighth grader at Eisenhower Middle School when he tied for first overall at the Region 20 contest. A spelling stand-off ensued, and two students were eventually named the winners. Nathan is excited to attend Churchill High School next year and plans to continue competing at the high school level.

“Getting the words right,” said Nathan. “That’s my favorite part. It’s a great feeling of relief.”

Good luck to Caleb and Nathan as they represent NEISD and all of San Antonio next week!
