May 17, 2019 - Canyon Ridge Elementary School cuts Ribbon on New Sports Park

The rainy weather couldn’t stop Canyon Ridge Elementary School from celebrating the grand opening of their San Antonio Sports Park. The community came together on Friday, May 17, 2019, for a great celebration. The school held a ribbon cutting ceremony for their new sports park with students, staff, neighbors, and special guests. This park is unique as it is for the entire community, not just for the students at Canyon Ridge.

The park was initiated by the Stone Oak Property Association and their generous $50,000 donation. The District partnered with them and San Antonio Sports to make it a reality.

The park features two soccer fields with goals, shaded canopy cover, ten mesa grande sitting blocks, four unit disc golf game set, garden planters for flower and vegetable planting, benches and physical fitness equipment set around the track. Thanks to the District’s 2015 bond program, the park also features a walking track.

“This program is a partnership between the City of San Antonio, San Antonio Sports and North East ISD to develop public school grounds into neighborhood parks,” said Dr. Sean Maika, Interim Superintendent of North East ISD.

On hand for the celebration was City Councilman John Courage, Theo Guidry, chairman of the San Antonio Area Foundation Board of Directors and George Block from San Antonio Sports.

The park will be open to the public from sunrise to sunset on Saturdays, Sundays, and school holidays. The park will also be open during the week after school at 6:30 p.m. until sunset.

Canyon Ridge is NEISD’s seventh sports park.  Woodstone Elementary School opened theirs earlier this month.
