NEISD Campus Safety Specialist Spotlight: Colonial Hills ES George Trevino

Monday through Friday, George Trevino walks the morning drop-off line at Colonial Hills Elementary School. Once all the students are safely in class, Trevino begins his rounds through the halls, checking doors and monitoring cameras.

Trevino is one of North East ISD’s Campus Safety Specialists (CSS). Our Safety Specialist position fulfills the House Bill 3 requirement that an armed security officer is present at each campus. They are stationed at our elementary schools and are solely focused on security. They monitor school grounds, ensure doors are locked, security cameras are working, and fencing and parking lots are secure. They also lead safety drills and training.

Trevino is former military. During his active duty career, he served as part of Operation Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He then spent 10 years in the National Guard. He’s been a police officer for a neighboring school district and a federal police officer working at the airport and the Department of Veteran Affairs. When the tragedy in Uvalde happened, Trevino wanted to put his training to work and protect our schools.

“I’m very grateful that this position came up because there was a calling when this opened up, and I wanted to be the first person in this position to take care of the kids and take care of the staff,” said Trevino. “As a parent, I don’t want to see anybody worry or hear about any kids worrying about going to school because of safety.”

Our highly trained CSS team undergoes continuous training throughout the year to ensure they are ready for any security threat. They are a vital part of our multi-level security and safety processes, helping to keep our students and staff safe.

“If anything happens, we are going to be there, the first ones to respond to it. Hopefully, it never, ever happens. But, if it does, we’re here.”
