It’s all in the name at Camp Invention.
North East ISD Gifted & Talented (GT) elementary students spent their week tinkering, creating and collaborating as they curated original creations at Coker Elementary School.
Science, technology, arts, engineering and mathematics (STEAM) all took center stage as the kids rotated through different modules. For example, in one room, students made a splash with robotic aquatics. In this exercise, they tapped into their design skills to create a unique underwater habitat inside a fish bowl for their jellyfish.
Another favorite challenge was the marble arcade. Students combined their physics, engineering and gaming skills to design, build and test a cardboard course for their marble to successfully navigate.
Camp Invention was a huge hit this week, with 180 GT students attending and more than 30 middle and high school volunteers.
“We’ve been helping give the students ideas about their projects,” said Braedon Montgomery, Reagan High School junior. “The kids have been thrilled all week. Their excitement is through the roof. I really like helping the kids. It’s such a satisfying feeling.”
NEISD’s GT teachers stepped up to teach the courses and nurture that passion for exploration and creativity in their students.
“You can really see their incredible abilities shining through this week,” said Laura Newberger, Stone Oak GT Teacher. “This camp gave them the opportunity to have a special something just for them outside of when we meet during the school year and it’s been extraordinary to watch.”
