Ready for the runway

Johnson HS Fashion Design students with textThe University of the Incarnate Word Red Dress Competition and Runway Show features original designs by students across San Antonio. Only 20 garments make it to the runway portion of the contest. Johnson High School Fashion Design students had all five submissions selected for the runway.

“I am extremely proud of what they created, especially considering that they were virtual last year when they were in Fashion Design I or Fashion Design II,” said Mandy LaCour, Fashion Design Instructor. “They worked so hard to catch up with the skills and techniques that they missed last year. They have surpassed my expectations with the quality of their sewing abilities. This is demonstrated by the fact that their garments were chosen to be in the University of Incarnate Words Red Dress Fashion Show alongside college students.”

Gema Phillips, Ava Cadena, Nina Hyde, Emily Martinez and Alyssa Martinez-Salazar submitted garments that they constructed in class and had to follow specific guidelines set by the UIW.

More than 40 garments were submitted by nine different high schools. Only 20 garments were selected to walk the runway. The five chosen garments by Johnson students were the most of any high school in the area.

Congratulations!
