Longs Creek fourth grader gets big win in writing contest

Maris and Laurie Tuttle hold a copy of her storyMaris Villarreal is only nine, but she’s already on her way to becoming a writer.

The Longs Creek Elementary School fourth grader was recently named a runner-up in an international Spooktacular Writing Contest from News-O-Matic, an educational website that provides daily news articles for kids. Maris could hardly believe the news.

“I was really excited,” said Maris.

Maris’ story, The Little Monster, was featured on the News-O-Matic website for kids to read around the world. Longs Creek Librarian Laurie Tuttle also read it on the morning announcements for the entire school to enjoy.

Tuttle shared the writing contest with Longs Creek students and Maris was brave enough to take on the prompt. Her work speaks for itself and now her love of writing is just as strong as her passion for reading.

Librarians like Tuttle are a treasured resource for our schools. They are always looking for new opportunities and challenges to spark creativity in our students #theNEISDway
