The Reagan stage is alive with “The Sound of Music”

The stage is alive with The Sound of Music at Reagan High School. This week, fine arts students begin their run of performances of the iconic musical. Madison Smith is playing Maria, who was portrayed by Julie Andrews in the film adaptation.

“I’ve always loved The Sound of Music,” said Smith. “Julie Andrews in the movie is amazing, so knowing this was going to be our first big show after COVID and getting to do this for a real audience – I am so excited.”

Reagan orchestra, band, choir and theater students will all perform in harmony to put on the show. But the von Trapp family could not be complete without a little help from its feeder elementary and middle schools. Alexa Driggs of Tuscany Heights Elementary School is playing Marta von Trapp while Rose De La Cruz of Las Lomas Elementary School plays Gretl von Trapp. Bush Middle School’s Jackson Turner is playing Kurt von Trapp and Savannah Driggs is playing Brigitta von Trapp.

“My favorite thing about coming here is working with the choreographers and just kind of hanging out with the teenagers backstage and just having fun,” said Alexa Driggs.

Performances of The Sound of Music will run through Feb. 17 – 19 at 7 p.m. in the Reagan auditorium. A special 2 p.m. performance will take place on Saturday, Feb. 19. Click here to purchase your tickets.

“Everyone has the movie in the mind but I think what you’re going to experience here is a deeper connection to the story,” said Paul Fillingam, Artistic Director of Reagan’s Theater Department. “So, you’re going to see the things you love and know about The Sound of Music but you’re also going to get some new things as well.”
