Walzem welcomes volunteer with open arms

Erika Gonzales holds Snak Pak 4 Kids boxesNothing stops Walzem Elementary School parent Erika Gonzales from volunteering at NEISD.

Erika's first language is Spanish. At first, she was nervous she wouldn't be able to contribute as a volunteer. Instead, the Walzem staff and community welcomed her with open arms.

Her favorite part of volunteering is the pride she gets from supporting the staff, teachers, volunteers, students and the new Spanish-speaking parents.

"I volunteer because it feels good to help other people. Volunteering has always been important to me. My mom volunteered at my school when I was a little girl. I loved that feeling of pride, seeing my mom in action. My kids see me volunteering at their school and how important it is to give back to your community. [I hope] they will feel like I do and volunteer at their children's school."

One of Erika's favorite volunteer activities is coordinating the Perfect Attendance Festival. One of the activities is the tug-of-war game. Erika enjoys seeing how happy the students are when their name is called to participate in the festival. Another highlight for Erika is taking English classes at Walzem.

There's something for everyone at North East ISD. As we celebrate Public School Volunteer Week, please consider joining the hundreds of volunteers who are making a difference #theNEISDway.
