Walzem Elementary School’s Yesenia Covarrubias got quite the surprise today.

She was named the 2020 Elementary Clinical Teacher of the Year by the Texas Directors of Field Experience.

“I am overwhelmed. It is very sweet,” said Covarrubias. “I actually came here for Pre-K at Walzem. I was so happy to be back where it all started. Thank you to everyone who supported me. Teachers make a huge impact. They made a huge impact on my life. I hope to be the teachers I had with my kids.”

She will be officially recognized at the state conference in October.

But today’s ceremony allowed her to celebrate with her students and her Alma Mater, The University of the Incarnate Word.

“We want to congratulate you on an outstanding job, not only during your practice teaching but, what I am hearing from your kids, is that you are an awesome teacher here as well,” said UIW Dean Denise Staudt. “Having beaten everyone in the state of Texas is just amazing. We just want to say we are so proud of you.”

NEISD is very proud of you too.

Congratulations, Yesenia!

You are already making such an impact on so many kids #theNEISDway!
