With each new school year, students are expected to extend their learning to new concepts and skills. We share this list as an opportunity for parents to reinforce skills and bridge the learning from year to year. Please refer to the prior grade level for skills to reinforce and future grade level for skills to accelerate.
Math Milestones

- Count to 99
- Recognize digits up to 20
- Use different number combinations that equal 10 (2+8, 3+7)
- Understand the difference between adding and subtracting (addition is joining and subtraction is separating)

- Students self-select text
- Establish purpose for reading
- Recognize common types of texts (fiction, informational)
- Make predictions using text features, such as titles, pictures and simple graphics (with adult assistance)
- Make connections to personal experiences and ideas in other texts (with adult assistance)
- Make inferences and use evidence to support understanding (with adult assistance)
- Retell what they read in order to capture the overall meaning of the text
- Identify characters, settings, and major events in a story, including the problem and solution (with adult assistance)
Before-During-After Questions to ask your reader:
BEFORE Reading:
- What do you think this book is about?
- What do you think will happen?
DURING Reading:
- What do you think is going to happen next?
- How does the main character feel?
- Why do you think a character is acting the way he/she is acting? Feeling? Show how you know using the book. (text evidence)
AFTER Reading:
- Do you like this book? Why?
- What is your favorite part? Why?
- Who was your favorite character? What did you like about them?
- Can you tell me the story in your own words?
