I collaborated with teachers to create a lesson on the essential parts of the school community. Students drew themselves around various parts of the school, such as the library, cafeteria, gym, or classroom.
The librarian introduced Pre-K students to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and how he wanted peace for all. Students created a mobile using a cut out of a paper hand, a peace dove, and a small picture of Dr. King.
Numerous mini-lessons were taught to the Pre-K students to reinforce the state-mandated Pre-K guidelines. Those lessons included social-emotional learning, such as teaching breathing exercises, engaging in pre-reading activities by asking questions about stories, caring for books, book selection, and many more.
The librarian collaborated with the STEM teacher on Bears on Chairs, a lesson. The students were asked to devise a plan to sit five bears on four chairs. Students were given miniature chairs, Keva planks, popsicle sticks, and drawing paper to brainstorm how to accommodate the fifth bear. It was amazing to see them create and explain their plan.
Students listened to a story about Mexican art to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. One particular art skill that the book mentioned was repujado art, the art of metal embossing. Students were shown examples of repujado art and then allowed to design something. They covered plates with foil and used skewers to create an impression in the foil.
