The teacher-librarian provided staff with weekly library news slides suggesting possible library activities, timely correlation of print or electronic resources and TEKS coverage, as well as community virtual learning opportunities.
The teacher-librarian maintained a Facebook and Instagram account to advocate for both teachers, staff, parents, and community members. Shared posts covered library events as well as family literacy suggestions.
The teacher-librarian modeled teaching strategies, STEM integration, and collection development discussed in district trainings. The classroom teachers can take practices back to the classroom. One simple example expanded on story settings. We used duplos and magnatiles to build our own creations (loosely based on the books If I Built a House/School/Car by Chris Van Dusen). Teachers mentioned “Oh, we build for rainy day indoor recess but I never thought about tying it into a book.”
The teacher-librarian managed two book fairs. The goal of our fairs was twofold … raise money for possible author visits or adding to the library collection as well as get books into student home libraries. Thanks to a grandparent donation several students were able to purchase a new book!
The teacher-librarian continues to grow professionally by using ideas from several professional reads including 5 Kinds of Nonfiction: Enriching Reading and Writing Instruction, both of the EduProtocol books, Evolving Education, Fully Engaged, and Teach with Magic.
