Have you read any good dresses lately?

Jackson Middle School eighth-grader Leia takes a different approach to dressmaking.

She created a dress out of 200 pages of a Harry Potter book, wire and hot glue.

“I love reading, and I use it as a way to escape reality and live in my own magical world,” said Leia. “So, I think that by creating a project in real life, something that can be seen and touched, I think that, in a way, it was like I was bringing the book to life. It was also like nothing I’d ever done before, so I think that I really didn’t want to pass up an opportunity to create something like this.”

“Leia is a phenomenal artist, avid reader and exceptional student all around,” said Ymelda Salas, Leia’s Advanced Art 1 teacher. “She aspires to be the best at everything she does, all while maintaining an extremely humble spirit. She truly doesn’t realize how amazing she is. She worked on this for weeks, and it turned out absolutely phenomenal.”

Finishing the dress gave Leia a strong sense of pride and also gratitude.

Leia says she felt like her teacher really let her make her own rules and be as creative as she wanted to be.

“Being in this class has allowed me to grow and challenge myself, and I will be forever grateful that I had the chance to take it.”

Well done, Leia.

This dress certainly does impress.
