Serving students is a family affair for Krueger Cafeteria Manager

North East ISD’s dedicated cafeteria staff and School Nutrition Services team work tirelessly to serve more than 50,000 meals daily to our students and staff. National School Lunch Week is a chance to highlight the crucial role workers like Tomasita Hernandez play in shaping the lives of our students.
Hernandez is the Food Service Manager at Krueger Middle School. Serving NEISD students runs in her family. Her mom was a cafeteria manager at Clear Spring Elementary School, and her grandmother was a school nutrition employee at Wilshire and Royal Ridge elementary schools.
“I’ve been with our District for 24 years. I love it. I was taught early on how to do things in the back of the house. But my manager pushed me to go to the management training program. It really helped me. I learned a lot.”
She’s now in charge of her team, but more importantly, in charge of feeding more than 700 kids a day.
“I love serving breakfast. I want to interact with the kids. I want to make sure they are fed. We are feeding more and more kids every year. So I like to be out here with them first thing in the morning.”
Hernandez’s favorite recipes are the chicken pepperoni pasta and the world-famous enchiladas.
But, she admits, since her family has been cooking in our District for so long, some NEISD recipes are just how things are done at home too.
“We make the NEISD enchiladas at home. My grandmother would make the NEISD cinnamon rolls. They are good!”
Join us in saying thank you #theNEISDway during National School Lunch Week, Oct. 10 – 14.
