A lesson in thankfulness
“It reminds me of why we celebrate Thanksgiving in the first place.”
Krueger School of Applied Technologies (KSAT) sixth-grader Cameron really got a lot of today’s lesson.
He and his classmates have been working for weeks on a project to show their appreciation to the school’s custodians and cafeteria staff.
“The custodians were often short-handed and working longer hours due to COVID,” said KSAT Teacher Alyse Hendricks. “The cafeteria ladies continued to serve the students hot, nutritious meals and always with a smile. So, wanted to find a way to give back.”
After research, price comparisons, and little help from H-E-B, the students surprised their 11 cafeteria workers with various pies and their eight custodians with family-sized Thanksgiving meals with all the trimmings just before the Thanksgiving break.
“Throughout the project, the students have made all the decisions,” said KSAT Teacher Christin Herrada. “They chose to participate in the fundraising. They chose where and how they wanted to spend the money they raised as well as what kind of pies to get.”
Students were thankful for this opportunity because “with a little research, we made someone’s day.” For another student, it touched his heart because “my papa was a custodian.”
Special thanks goes to Erica Hanchey, a parent who works for H-E-B. The class greatly appreciated her help and guidance in purchasing and delivering the Thanksgiving meals and desserts.
