Congratulations to Student Hero Award winner Michael Frere

Michael Frere is one of 12 Texas teens to be recognized with the State Board of Education’s (SBOE) Student Hero Award. He went to class expecting another normal day at the International School of the Americas (ISA). He left with a plaque and a surprise visit from a few of his biggest fans.
Marisa Pérez-Díaz, District 3 SBOE member, Shannon Grona, NEISD Board of Trustees President, Dr. Sean Maika, Superintendent of Schools and Steve Magadance, ISA Principal surprised Michael during class Tuesday, Sept. 21. He was given a special plaque commemorating his state recognition.
Michael is a sophomore at ISA, but he spent his middle school years at the STEM Academy at Nimitz Middle School. During his time at STEM, he joined the Students Offering Service (SOS) program and racked up more than 200 community service hours. He also created an arts and crafts activity day for children in the San Antonio Metropolitan Ministries Homeless Shelter.
He loved being part of the SOS Student Advisory Council that provides opportunities for service and travel activities. Michael was chosen to be a part of a group of Student Ambassadors to represent San Antonio virtually in Germany.
The Student Hero award goes to students whose acts of kindness, charity and selfless service positively impact others. Congratulations, Michael!
