Meet a Crossing Guard, volunteer, advocate & friend

Linda and two safety patrols pose for a photo

Linda Van Dyke knows the name of every student who crosses the street to get to Regency Place Elementary School. If you drive down MacArthur View during morning drop-off or afternoon pick-up, you’ll see Linda expertly directing the flow of traffic and escorting students across the street. She’s been the Crossing Guard at Regency Place for more than 20 years.

“I love being outside and seeing the kids. I love the kids, and I love the parents. This whole community is great. The staff is really supportive and the administration at the school is so wonderful.”

If you ask any teacher, parent or student on campus – Linda is much more than the Crossing Guard. She’s been known to decorate the teachers’ lounge. She volunteers with the PTA and picks up donations of books and clothes for students. It’s her mission to get her beloved kiddos across the street safely and to help them get what they need to be successful.

Linda works closely with the fifth-grade Safety Patrols who assist during drop-off and pick-up. She also decorates an honorary safety patrol knight that greets every kid on their way to class.

“I love all of the kiddos and the parents. Seeing the kids grow up is really special. Sometimes former safety patrols will come back and ask, ‘Do you remember me?’ and it’s really important to them that I do.”

School Crossing Guards are thoroughly trained by the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD). Linda is an expert on the rules of the road, but she’s also an expert on the rules of the heart. That’s what she leads with every day when she greets every student and parent at Regency Place.

Thank you, Linda!
