Mrs. Melanie Ferraro-Thorson
I have been a Texas certified educator for over 12 years, and am certified in both English Language Arts and English as a Second Language (ESL). I have taught in two public high schools in the state of Texas, teaching not only English Language Arts, but various courses, including: AP, GT, SAT, Academic Literacy, and dual enrollment facilitator. I enjoy creating positive classroom experiences and helping students reach their goals.
I came to be an educator after having worked as a staff writer for the local newspaper in Laredo, Texas, while simultaneously attending graduate school at Texas A&M International University. The writing experience at the newspaper was both challenging and exciting. I learned how to balance speed and accuracy, and meet daily deadlines. Little did I know that teaching would offer even more challenging and rewarding experiences!
One of the biggest challenges I have experienced as a teacher is creating lessons that can be tailored to different learning styles and different abilities. Over time, I have learned that a well-crafted and thoughtful lesson can meet every student at their own skill levels and needs.
I am a mother of four adult girls, who are either attending college or who have completed college and pursuing lives of their own. Born in Austin, Tx., I was raised in San Antonio, attending both St. Lukes Episcopal School and Texas Military Institute. I graduated from the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston, Tx. Currently, I have a B.A. in English Language Arts with a minor in Studio Art from Texas A&M University and am working on a masters in English.
My background in studio art offers me a unique way to connect with students through art, an avenue that is intrinsically innovative, challenging, and exciting. I enjoy incorporating creative experiences inspired by literature, taking it beyond the page and into the world.
I look forward to the new challenges this year will bring and the new positive experiences that keep me coming back every year.
