Jeffry Van Slycke

I was not the scholar. I failed English twice in high school. I did. And at San Antonio College, I failed Algebra multiple times before I finally passed. I get it. I struggled through high school working--without exaggeration, four different jobs at the same time: 80 hours a week on top of school. That was 10 hours a day after school, Monday - Friday, and 15 hours a day on Saturday and Sunday.  But perseverance pays off. Stay the course and stay strong, and you can achieve great things. From this high school challenge, here is what I have become:

Right out of high school, Mr. Van Slycke enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving three years as a Military Police Officer. During that time, he was a dog handler, and then in Okinawa, as a Military Police Investigator. For his service, Mr. Van Slycke was awarded the Army Commendation Medal.

Mr. Van Slycke patrolled the streets of Houstion as a Police Officer from 1977 - 1979, leaving to return home. joining the San Antonio Police Department. Over his 20-year SAPD career, Mr. Van Slycke worked patrol, Crime Prevention, Planning and Research, Robbery Investigations, SAFFE, and oversaw cadet training for several years.

In 1999, the Department of State called upon Mr. Van Slycke to assist in building an entire new police force in the province of Kosovo in the aftermath of a civil war. Over a three year period, Mr. Van Slycke was selected to be the Executive Officer of the Police Commissioner. In that capacity, he crafted and facilitated the delivery of a speech at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium. Mr. Van Slycke has trained police officers in Kosovo, Russia, Germany, and Iraq.

Mr. Van Slycke has been in the classroom teaching English and coaching for 13 years, leading the Debate teams on three different campuses and serving as the UIL Academic Coordinator on two campuses.

Mr. Van Slycke has taught English and worked with the Achieve Edgenuity program on two campuses, and joins the Madison Achieve team as the Coordinator this year. He is excited to work with students who seek to Achieve and move forward.
