A message to my students:
This is a crazy time, but I'm excited for the challenge. I hope you all had a great break and are ready to try to create some normalcy with our new online distance program. I know I have missed you guys and I'm sad we won't be face to face in the classroom, but we can try to keep those relationships alive in our online classrooms through group discussions and Zoom Video Calls. I have created NEW Google Classrooms, to seperate out my students and to make grading and interaction as similar as to the actual classroom as possible. Please use the New Google Codes BELOW to join YOUR class period. More info will be posted to their soon, like Calendars and what to expect.
Our remind is going to become more critical than ever. So if you haven't already joined my remind, please do so now.
Algebra 2 GT Remind code: Send a text to 81010 with the code @sotoalg2gt
PAP Geometry Remind code: Send a text to 81010 with the code @geomsoto
The last remind I sent was about contacting your 2nd period teacher to let them know if you have internet access. The school will contact you with more about this, but I'm getting a head start by asking my students to be proactive. Reagan will be accomodating those without internet at home. But I strongly encourage you to look around for free internet options. I know Spectrum was offering free basic packages during this time.
Lastly, Texas instruments will be providing students with free student software to download to have an Nspire calculator at home. This will be amazing because it will mean students will NOT have to buy a calculator for this. They can simply download the software and have a calculator emulator on their computer at home. Please click here to download the Nspire CX Student Software. (Third one from the left) If you already have a calculator, the student calculators come with a free version of this. Just download the software and enter in the code it gives you to get this on your computer permanantly. :)
If you have any questions, feel free to shoot me an email. Otherwise be on the lookout for your curriculum in your assigned Google Classroom. Talk to you soon. This is going to be fun!
Hi, my name is Victoria Soto and this is my fourth year at Reagan High School. I can't believe this is going to be my 10th year of teaching. I am also a T3 Instructor for Texas Instruments where I get to travel around the country and show other educators how TI calculators are used to INCREASE thought provoking math & problem solving. I also learn a lot from fellow educators on the latest and greatest in math education.
My passion is finding ways to close the gaps with students' math struggles. Math is tough for the average student and by using different forms of technology, specifically the TI-Nspire CX handheld, I've seen students make tremendous strides in mathematics. The students will experience a different type of learning with a different type of calculator. There will be normal paper/pencil notes days, group work days, but then there will be days where I'll try to get them to discover the math. I've found when doing this, retention rates are higher and it increases scores on standardized testing.
Students should expect to come into a class where struggle is supported & perseverance is encouraged through motivation. My communication line is always open for students and parents and I look forward to my best years at Reagan.
