Mr. Major Larry Garcia
In November 2011, I completed twenty-two years of military service and retired from the United States Army Reserve shortly after returning from my third overseas deployment. My first ten years in the military was spent in the enlisted ranks until I graduated from Officer Candidate School in 1998. Aside from serving on active duty in the Air Force from 1988 to 1992, I served proudly as an Civil Affairs Officer with active duty units in Iraq from March 2003 to April 2004 (First Marine Expeditionary Force), Afghanistan from October 2007 to October 2008 (3-71 CAV, 10th Mountain Division; 1-91 CAV, 173d Airborne Brigade) and October 2010 to August 2011 (1BCT, 101 Airborne Division, 3 BCT 25th Infantry Division).
During my third deployment while on active duty serving in Afghanistan, I also became eligible to retire from my civilian career as a High Voltage Electrical Powerline Foreman at Lubbock Power and Light and subsequently retired after 20 years in the electrical trade. Prior to my last deployment, I set a goal to enter the secondary educational system by becoming a JROTC instructor with the ambition of sharing my knowledge and experience in both the military and civilian sectors to coach, teach and mentor young adults. After years of planning, my wife and I decided to move our three children from Lubbock to the San Antonio area to start new careers.
I earned a Master of Arts in Management from Wayland Baptist University in 2005. I also hold an associate degree from the Community College of the Air Force and a bachelor degree from Wayland. With aspirations of becoming a certified teacher, I earned a Master of Education in 2013 from Wayland Baptist University here in San Antonio.
My military experience and accomplishments afforded me the opportunity to learn diversity, leadership and the ability to excel in varying assignments regardless of the level of responsibility or unfavorable environmental factors. I am confident that as a JROTC Senior Army Instructor I will discharge my duties of “Motivating Young People to Become Better Citizens” with professionalism and steadfast demeanor.
I look forward to many more years of service and helping prepare the MacArthur High School youth for the challenges following graduation and providing them with the tools necessary to attain their goals and excel in the career of their choice.
