The AVID elective is tailored to promote growth in students with a desire to take more rigorous courses, work hard, and begin setting themselves up on a successful path to college.

Core Strategies and practices

Cornell Note taking and

binder organization / daily planner use (50% of grade)

tutorials (twice a week, led by college tutors) (40% of grade)

Academic activities (socratic circles, Philosophical chairs) and

Teambuilding exercises / class work (10% of grade)


Field trips / Events

7th and 8th grade will each take four field trips this year.  A typical field trip includes a visit/tour of an accredited university (Trinity, UTSA, A&M San Antonio, Incarnate Word, Palo Alto, UT Austin), and a visit to a cultural location (Botanical Gardens, Witte Museum, Toyota Factory, First Gen Festival, San Antonio Missions, etc…)


About Mr. Espey

·       Bachelor of Interdisciplinary studies from A&M San Antonio

·       Master of Education in Educational Administration from Concordia University.

·       Happily married for 11 years and 3 children!

·       Teacher at Jackson for 7 years.  4 as the 8th grade math teacher, On my 3rd as Avid Coordinator.

My goal

Your child was selected for the AVID program because they have expressed a desire to maximize their academic potential.  As their AVID teacher my goal is to provide the additional academic, social, and emotional support that will help them succeed in their school’s most rigorous courses.
