Bachelor of Science Human Services and Management Masters of Science: Emphasis Teaching Special Needs Individuals

Ms. Sandi Swaim

This is my 18th year teaching ALE/SLE students.  I hold a Bachelor of Science Degree in Human Services and Management, and a Master of Science Degree in Education: Emphasis in teaching special needs individuals. From the time I was a little girl I always wanted to work with special needs individuals and someday have a daughter named Raeanna. Well, this all came true, but little did I know that Raeanna who was born with Down Syndrome would lead me to the path of teaching special needs individuals. I believe that no matter what the disability all individuals can succeed and accomplish great things when given the proper tools and interventions along with working as a team (both family and school). My students all learn quickly that I believe in everyone and will not accept I can’t, but instead I will try. My record over the past 8 years teaching at Eisenhower shows how I push each student to the next level. I have had two students successfully graduate out of ALE and join the SPED/General education classes, and both held their status in honor society. Other students I have been able to move out of ALE and into resource classes for some of their education. I have had students who have never verbally spoke start trying to us words and articulation, along with gain patience with others who have difficulty understanding them. My students know they are cared for and loved by being reinforced in everything they do and knowing that whatever needs they have the adults around them will take the time and be there for them whenever they need a little extra. I use my voice, actions, and personal time to advocate for not only my students, but their families as well. Each student learns they are valued and learn that everyone is equal no matter what the differences. I work at molding students to become as independent and prepared as possible for the next step in their life. We all grow together and learn from each other daily. This will be my 8th year of teaching grades 6-8 within the ALE/SLE classrooms here at Eisenhower. My life and passion are to serve all students and families towards achieving their highest potential.
