Emily Gurwitz

Emily Gurwitz, head band director at Bradley Middle School, is a product of North East ISD schools in San Antonio, Texas, and has been teaching middle school band for 26 years. Mrs. Gurwitz received her Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Trinity University in San Antonio and her Master of Music in Flute Performance from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Under her direction, the Bradley Middle School Bands have received consistent Sweepstakes Awards as well as other awards at various competitions throughout the state. In 2013 and 2017, the Bradley Middle School Honor Band placed first in the TMEA Region 12 Honor Band competition. In 2019, the Honor Band finished 3rd in Area E.  This accomplishment places the Bradley Honor Band as the highest ranking 3C middle school band program in San Antonio! Mrs. Gurwitz has been a band clinician for several middle and high school band programs throughout the San Antonio area.

In addition to being a band director, Mrs. Gurwitz teaches private lessons to high school flute students. Her high school students have placed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the state in the 6A competition and she has had over 20 Texas all-state flute students. Her flute students have also won various concerto competitions and have been awarded scholarships to study music at many different universities. Two years ago, Mrs. Gurwitz taught her first private trumpet student, a freshman, who also placed in the 6A all-state band.

Mrs. Gurwitz has been married to Elliott Gurwitz, who is the web specialist for North East ISD Construction Management Department, for 22 years. They have two children, Ethan who is 19 and Zoe who is 15 and both are both accomplished musicians.  Ethan qualified for the Texas 6A All-State band three times, finishing 2nd chair French Horn in the state his senior year. He will be starting his sophomore year at Southern Methodist University as a Music Composition and Mathematics Double Major.  Zoe, finished first in Region 12 Middle School Oboe auditions both as a 7th and 8th grader and made Area Band as a freshman at Churchill High School.
