My name is Joseph. Most people call me Joey. I'm 37 years old and originally from San Antonio. I attended the University of Texas at San Antonio from 2002 to 2006. That was quite a time period, wasn't it? Social media and YouTube were born, smartphones did not exist, and a 12'' PowerBook was my primary device. My studies focused on digital media and design and audio engineering.
From 2006 to 2012 I was employed at the University of the Incarnate Word, the largest Catholic university in the state. I wore many hats as a Library Assistant. I ordered library materials using the acquisitions module of the technical software we used. I did some copy cataloging when those materials were received. And sometimes I even got to request what was being ordered. In addition to technical services, I also worked in public services staffing the reference desk. I was there to help with any and all information literacy needs.
Eventually I left UIW and moved north to Denton for graduate school. I attended the University of North Texas from 2013 to 2014. My studies focused on archival museum imaging and integrated library systems. I also worked as a Teaching Assistant for my department. But it was after grad school that things really got interesting. I chose to leave the United States. First, I lived in mainland China. Then, I lived in Russia. Then the Netherlands. Then Turkey. Finally, after more than 4 years abroad, I returned home to Texas in 2019. Culture is fascinating.
In the Spring of 2019 I was hired by NEISD as a Substitute Teacher. Then, during the 2019-2020 school year, I worked exclusively at North East Alternative Center as an Instructional Assistant. I'm very proud to join the team at Jackson-Keller Elementary for the 2020-2021 school year. I am currently on an Intern Certificate working as the Redirection Teacher. My subject area is Special Education.
As a librarian, you can probably guess, I love to read. I read a lot. I'm also a binge watcher, an enthusiastic eater, a visual art maker, and a supporter of the Oxford comma. Please feel free to reach out anytime!
