The NEISD Special Olympics Program provides students with intellectual disabilities opportunities to participate in sports training and athletic competition in a supportive and inclusive environment. Through instruction and coaching provided by Adapted Physical Education (APE) Specialists, students develop physical fitness, sport-specific skills, confidence, teamwork, and sportsmanship while experiencing the joy of participation and personal achievement.

APE Specialists serve as coaches and trainers, incorporating sport-specific skills, physical conditioning, and competition preparation into APE instruction. Through ongoing practice and individualized support, students build the skills needed to participate successfully in Special Olympics events while developing lifelong healthy and active habits.

NEISD offers a variety of Special Olympics opportunities throughout the school year, including:

  • Elementary, Middle School and HIgh School  Bowling Tournaments (Fall)
  • Elementary Basketball Skills Assessment (Winter)
  • High School Special Olympics Basketball Tournament (Winter)
  • Track & Field Events for All Grade Levels (Spring)
  • Fundamental Sports for athletes requiring alternative participation opportunities (Spring)

Participation is available to students who are at least 8 years old, meet Special Olympics eligibility criteria for individuals with an intellectual disability, cognitive delay, or significant learning challenges resulting from a cognitive delay, and have the required medical documentation on file.

The program promotes physical, social, and emotional growth while providing students opportunities to demonstrate courage, build friendships, develop self-confidence, and achieve success through athletics. Through participation, students, families, educators, and community members come together to celebrate abilities, foster inclusion, and create meaningful experiences that support lifelong wellness and personal growth.

NEISD is committed to empowering every Special Olympics athlete by providing opportunities to train, compete, achieve, and be recognized for their accomplishments.
