Ms. Mary Kate Motley

I grew up only about an hour away in Kerrville where I graduated from our town's only public high school, Tivy. Upon graduating, I attended Texas Tech University, and followed my interests, majoring in English Literature and Language and minoring in French. I was lucky enough to study abroad in France during the summer before my senior year. While in France I visited some of my favorite cities to read about. However, I was even luckier to travel a little further north to London, the land of a number of my literary heroes. Upon graduating with honors from Texas Tech, I moved to Denton. In my three years living in Denton, I earned two masters degrees from the University of North Texas--a Master of Arts in English and a Master of Education in Secondary Education.

I did not grow up a reader (even though my mother was a reading teacher), but instead struggled to find a book that held my interest. For years I would only read and reread the Harry Potter series, which is still a favorite. While in high school, I watched the film version of Pride and Prejudice and was instantly interested in the characters and their world. I felt compelled to read the book. After I finished Pride and Prejudice, I read all of Jane Austen's other novels. Once I finished those I started picking books up that seemed similar. Finally, as a high school student I had become a successful reader--not from any program, but from the ability to choose my book. My unusual path to literacy is one of the reasons I chose to teach. It only takes one book to make someone a reader, and I will work endlessly to help my students find their books. I believe better readers become better writers, thinkers, and people. I am so excited to work in NEISD, and even more excited to work, write, and read with my students at Madison!
