Mr. Guerra, ESL Teacher

About Me:

Hello, everyone!  Welcome to the 2019 - 2020 academic school year!  My name is Nelson Guerra, and I am an English learner teacher.  I am thrilled to begin my eleventh year as an educator and seventh year at Lopez!  Go Panthers!  I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Our Lady of the Lake University in 2008.  At OLLU, I also completed the traditional teacher certification program.  Because of this great program, I had the opportunity of visiting numerous campuses throughout San Antonio when completing my clock-hours of field-based experiences.  For my clinical teaching assignments, I taught 8th grade U.S. History and 12th grade U.S. Government in SAISD.  After graduation, I was hired to teach social studies to 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th graders at the School of Science and Technology - Alamo Campus.  After that enriching experience, I joined NEISD to teach 7th grade English language arts at Clara Driscoll Middle School.  This experience made me realize how much I love teaching language arts.  I left Driscoll to become one of Lopez's English learner teachers and co-coordinators of the English Learner Department (EL Department).  Teaching language arts to English learners has become my passion.  I am currently working on a masters degree program in Educational Administration.  I am a certified teacher in the areas of Generalist EC-6, Generalist 4-8, Social Studies 8-12, Bilingual EC-12, and ESL EC-12.  I strongly believe in growing as an educator, so when I get a chance, I teach summer school at the elementary level.  I enjoy every minute of it!

My Mission:

My mission is to prepare all English learners for high school by providing them a safe learning environment while using the most up-to-date research in second language acquisition.

The Lopez EL Department:

The Lopez EL Department proudly stands for dedication, organization, and efficiency.  Our dedicated team takes great pride in providing the best educational experience for all of our students.  If you have any questions regarding our program, please do not hesitate to contact me or Mr. Rodriguez.
