Librarian

  • The librarian organized an author visit for the month of November. Grades Kinder through 5th were able to hear a presentation from author Liz Garton Scanlon. Students were actively engaged as the author walked them through the process of writing, editing and publishing a book.
  • The librarian introduced the Texas Bluebonnet Challenge (3-5) and the 2x2 (pre-K/2nd) Book Challenge to CG students. All students are encouraged to read award winning books for their enjoyment, and will have the opportunity to earn rewards and prizes when challenge is met.
  • The librarian planned, organized and implemented a fall Book Fair. Students, staff and community members were invited to purchase books from a variety of genres and topics. Proceeds from purchases benefited the Cibolo Green Library Program.
  • The librarian worked to promote the CG Library program through fun campus activities such as “You’ve Been Booked” bags. These bags travel periodically around campus, one for each grade level, as a way to promote new materials, fun authors, book titles, and campus reading incentives.

Teacher

  • The Librarian taught a lesson over Hispanic Heritage and culture. Students were immersed in different aspects of Hispanic culture, such as food, art, and music. The librarian used articles from digital resource News-o-matic to teach students facts about Hispanic Heritage and how to make a papel picado, a traditional Mexican decoration.
  • The librarian taught a research unit with 5th graders during WIN block (What I Need). During this time, students researched an enigma, along with theories to prove, and finally presented to classmates using Google Slides.
  • The librarian taught a research unit with 4th grade students where they chose a Lone Star Legend from Texas History to research. Students spent 5 weeks moving through the research process, utilizing library resources such as Britannica, Gale and PebbleGoNext. Information was collected in Google slides and for final products students made history come to life with a “living wax museum” event as a way to share their biographies.
  • The librarian taught a research unit to 2nd graders using a writing protocol provided by district ITS. Students researched animal adaptations using Pebble Go and Britannica Elementary. Students followed the entire inquiry process, learned how to paraphrase, take notes, and cite sources.

First grade students read Chez Bob by Bob Shea, and then worked to create a bird nest using Makerspace materials.

Lesson Spotlight

The librarian developed and implemented a Holidays Around the World unit in which students were able to “travel” to various countries to learn about culture, traditions and holidays celebrated. Library stations were implemented as a way to expose students to different places. As students visited each station, they could learn about that country’s culture through engaging activities that utilized library resources such as Culture Grams, News-O-Matic and National Geographic (Kids). Students could answer trivia questions, create a small craft, and even follow a recipe to make homemade gingerbread dough recipe as a way to immerse themselves into cultures around the world.

Collaborator

  • PLC group- The librarian participates in a PLC Library group monthly. Here librarians use collaborative team time to determine essentials, develop SMART Goals and track data to support library programming and the four roles of a librarian.
  • The librarian collaborated with ITS Laura Moore and classroom teachers during a 5th grade research unit on countries. Students chose a country to research and created a brochure to convince others to visit that country. The librarian showed students how to use Culture Grams as a resource for this unit. Students learned how to locate resources for research, take notes, and cite sources.
  • The librarian collaborated with the GT teacher to run the CG News Crew throughout the year. The CG News Crew is made up of 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students who work as anchors, videographers and script-writers. The librarian and the GT teacher collaborate to develop applications, conduct student interviews, create schedules, and train students for their different positions. Announcements are recorded daily and posted for classes through CG Youtube platform.
  • The librarian collaborated with the campus family specialist to provide lessons for preschoolers aged 3-4 living in the CG community. Virtual lessons included read-alouds using library books, a craft or activity for strengthening fine motor skills in direct correlation with the book, and extension resources for parents at home. The purpose of this time was to provide families with library resources and opportunities to foster a love for literacy in very young children.

Collaboration Spotlight

The librarian collaborated with another campus librarian to develop an inquiry unit about the life cycle of a chicken. Students were able to see the entire life-cycle process from egg to chicken. We set eggs into an incubator for 21 days here in the library, while spending time learning about chickens through various lessons. The librarians collaborated to develop lessons using fiction and non-fiction texts, Pebble Go, Britannica and instructional resources from Region 20’s Living Science Program. Students participated in an egg lab, where they were able to learn about the different parts of an egg. Students learned what is needed in order for an egg to develop into a healthy chick. Finally, students watched live on our “chick webcam” as our incubated eggs hatched into baby chicks! The collaboration between librarians allowed for maximum student learning outcomes through engaging lessons, hands-on experiences, and exposure to rich print and digital library resources.

Campus Leader

  • The librarian worked to plan a fall training for teachers and staff on resources available to teachers through the Library Resources page, such as New-o-matic, Culture Grams and PebbleGo Next. Information about Library Resources were shared with classroom teachers so that they can utilize them during classroom instruction throughout the school year.
  • The librarian serves as a member of the Campus Leadership Team. The CG Leadership team meets weekly to discuss areas of need in academics and behavior, to create and target campus goals and to target specific student/staff needs.
