• 2022/2023 Impact Report

Librarian

  • Johnson students and staff were invited to the library September Maker event to make a CTJ Spirit Button Mum. This activity was a huge hit and allowed every student the opportunity to have some type of Mum spirit gear for Homecoming week!
  • Students were given the opportunity to put their coding skills to work through a variety of Hour of Code activities. Students worked together and participated on code.org, Gravity Mazes, Ozobots bowling, and Lazer Mazes.
  • The library provided space, materials, and examples so students and staff could create Thankful Notes in November and Winter Holiday cards in December. Students were encouraged to share their creations with family, friends, and staff to spread joy!
  • Every Friday, Johnson students had opportunities to play board games on Game Day Fridays in the library. While playing, students met new people, made new friends, and took advantage of our “stress buster coloring pages” during this time.

Librarian and teacher teaching a class

Teacher

  • Mrs. Schmidt worked with Mr. Gillespie English IV classes to teach them Learning Express features to help them with decisions after high school. Our focus for this lesson was on Career & Interest Matcher, School Finder, and Scholarship Finder.
  • The librarian worked with Mrs. Mauldin’s Resource Class on a lesson about being Thankful. To ensure student success, ideas on how to show/share gratitude, blank thank you cards, and sentence starters were provided so students could write friends, family, and teachers thank you cards.
  • Mrs. Schmidt provided lessons on developing a researchable question and accessing and navigating library databases. These lessons covered how to narrow down your topic and how to most efficiently use the library resources for their best results.
  • Mrs. Schmidt worked with Mr. Bowles, a Career and Technology Education teacher, using Learning Express. His Architecture and Engineering classes used Learning Express to create savable, editable resumes that they can continue to use towards careers after high school.

Librarian teaching lesson

Lesson Spotlight

The librarian collaborated with English I teachers to provide a lesson on characteristics of different genres and knowledge about genre variety. Students learned about features of the genres, and then “speed dated” genres to find a book for their free-choice reading selection. Multiple genres were represented on tables; students “speed dated” a genre of their choice for a few minutes and then decided to keep a book from that table or leave empty handed to another genre of their choice. Students were well aware that they were to find a genre of their interest and find a book in a genre of their choice. Students were invested in this lesson because of the freedom to choose their own genre/title. They enjoyed the movement and quick rounds.

Collaborator

  • The Johnson CCMR and myself worked together to create a plan to get testing & test prep materials to students and parents taking a specific test. PSAT test prep tutorial slides were created and posted/mailed in all ways possible to families.
  • Mrs. Schmidt collaborated with our Assistant Principal and English teachers to ensure students were in the library during FLEX time for PSAT/NMSQT Test Prep. The librarian provided tutorials on how to access and use Learning Express PSAT Test Prep on the FLEX days leading up to the Oct 2022 PSAT Administration.
  • Mrs. Schmidt collaborated with the English III team on a Podcast project for their The Great Gatsby unit. Together, we developed a plan that incorporated the book reading with the small groups of students creating Gatsby podcasts using Padlet.
  • Mrs. Schmidt collaborated monthly with Mr. Ivan Martinez, the Teen Librarian and the San Antonio Public Library Encino Branch. Mr. Martinez came to visit the Johnson Library students on a regular basis throughout the school year.

Collaboration Spotlight

I am most proud of my work with the CCMR because I feel like it affected so many students and our school in a positive way. The slides with step by step directions to access Learning Express that went out to students and their families with directions on how to prepare for the PSAT, SAT, ACT, AP, etc. will help students feel more prepared and perform better on these tests; higher performance on these tests is a campus goal that I am proud to support. I am proud to know that due to our combined efforts of getting this resource to them, more students will earn scholarships and open other opportunities for themselves. In our collaborations, we also hosted a FAFSA night in the library in September. I believe students are very aware that there is a librarian and a resource to support them in all testing categories!

Campus Leader

  • Mrs. Schmidt provided Library resource training and library “how-to’s” to the entire staff in the fall of 2022. All faculty & staff were trained on & discussed all of the services the library can offer them, how to access the resources, and the Johnson culture.
  • The librarian served on the Connected Campus committee alongside our AP, ITS, and another teacher for the Fall 2022 technology deployment at Johnson. We made a deployment plan, presented information at a faculty meeting, labeled carts and Chromebooks, and delivered Chromebook carts to classrooms.
  • Mrs. Schmidt hosted community FAFSA Night with the Johnson Counselors and CCMR. This event was hosted in the library and was an opportunity for students and parents to attend and get FAFSA questions answered by staff and college experts.
  • To advocate for all of the services the library can provide, Mrs. Schmidt provided monthly electronic newsletters that were shared with students, staff, and the Johnson community. These newsletters were shared through email and social media, and were informative of all things available and happening at the library!
