• 2022/2023 Impact Report

Librarian

  • Grades 3-5 watched book trailers for the 2022-23 Bluebonnet Book List and learned about incentives for reading 5 or more titles by January. 25 students qualified to participate in the Bluebonnet Book Voting Party and cast their vote for this year’s favorite.
  • The librarian hosted a variety of animals and insects from the Education Service Center, Region 20, Living Science Center including snakes, turtles, frogs, cockroaches, tarantula, mice, and Monarch caterpillars/butterflies. By observing and studying these animals/insects, students were inspired to check-out related nonfiction books and conduct their own guided research at home.
  • The librarian sponsored an Hour of Code in the library in conjunction with the International Week of Code: Students accessed and explored coding activities and apps available at www.hourofcode.com/US and the NEISD Launchpad Technology Folder. After this introduction, one week per month was devoted to continuing these coding activities in the library for all grade levels.
  • The librarian promoted reading by organizing a variety of library-sponsored events, including Book Buddy classes, International Dot Day, Talk Like a Pirate Day, Texas Bluebonnet Award Program, 100 Book Challenge, Schlitterbahn Waves of Pages Reading Program, two Scholastic Book Fairs, winter/ spring/summer break reading challenges, Literary Pumpkin Patch, Fairy Tale Battle, March Madness School-wide Book Tournament, Read Across America Week and partnered with San Antonio Public Library (SAPL)to

Teacher

  • The librarian taught 5th grade students about library resources and tools available for researching famous Hispanic Americans and US Revolutionary Heroes. Final projects were displayed in the library for all students to view.
  • The librarian co-taught a 3rd Grade inquiry lesson on playground safety. After conducting field studies, students researched playground safety requirements, and then wrote letters to the principal with suggestions for improving the Longs Creek playground.
  • The librarian taught a lesson on the Texas Revolution for grades 3-5 in preparation for Bill Perryman’s “History in Person” presentation of Colonel William B. Travis for Texas Independence Day.
  • The librarian co taught a 2nd grade lesson on animal research using a variety of library resources. Students wrote reports and presented dioramas that were displayed in the library at the end of the unit.

Lesson Spotlight

In April, the librarian brought in four milkweed plants with 40 caterpillar eggs on them into the library for a 4-week observation. Every grade level observed the metamorphosis from egg to caterpillar to Monarch butterfly. A life cycle poster detailing each stage and the length of time for that stage was featured next to the container, so students could track the point in the cycle. In addition, nonfiction and fiction read-alouds accompanied the month-long lessons and were displayed for student check-out. Every student, PreK-5th, was able to correctly identify, label, and describe the life cycle stages in detail as well as apply it to other insects that go through a similar metamorphosis. Our students observed in real-time what they were studying in class as well as observing in their own backyards and community!

Collaborator

  • The librarian co-taught an after-school Coding Camp, grades 2-5, with our campus GT teacher. We had over 100 students attend the camp offered Sept-April. Students completed 5 Dash Robot Olympics Challenges.
  • The librarian collaborated with campus ITS and 5th grade teachers on projects for Hispanic Heritage Month and Revolutionary War Heroes using the DoInk app on the iPad. Final projects, which included green screen photographs and information boards, were displayed in the library.
  • The librarian collaborated with 3rd - 5th grade teachers during Black History Month by reading aloud Whoosh!, the story of Lonnie Johnson and His Super Soaking Stream of Inventions. Following the story, we watched an interview featuring his toy inventions and projects for NASA, then students created their own invention blueprints.
  • The librarian co-taught the “ Mommy and Me” Pre K Program for six weeks with our family specialist. Each week, parents were invited to the library for a story, a movement song, and a make and take craft activity with their child.

Collaboration Spotlight

The librarian co-taught an after school STEAM Club with the campus GT teacher throughout the year. For 4-6 weeks, each grade level had over 25 students stay after school to participate in a variety of STEAM activities. Students programmed Dash robots to speed skate around the perimeter of an “ice rinK,” and their robots were timed to see which collaborative team could complete the fastest path. In addition, students chose from various activities each week that included Van Gogh oil pastel drawin gs, 3D art, Lego challenges, Digital coding breakouts, and programming Ozobot robots through student-created mazes. Longs Creek 2nd-5th grade students had a blast while experiencing these hands-on STEAM activities!
