• 2022/2023 Impact Report

Librarian

  • Hispanic Heritage Month - The library held a promotion for Hispanic Heritage that tasked students with completing a Hispanic Hero trading card. Each card had a Hispanic Hero from various areas of interests that students researched and completed for a prize.
  • “Knowvember” Challenge - The library held a nonfiction reading challenge in November. Students were encouraged to read a nonfiction book of their choice and complete a review for a prize.
  • Monthly Choice Boards - The library created monthly choice boards using Canva to distribute to faculty/staff. Choice Boards were used during WIN time and consisted of themed activities.
  • Recommendations Catalog - The librarian created a recommendations catalog for popular genres and book themes for students to use. The catalog was updated throughout the year with heritage month and other themed recommendations.

Teacher

  • AVID students used Learning Express to complete a career exploration project. They utilized Interest Matcher and EduProtocols (Iron Chef) to identify occupation matches.
  • 6th ELAR - Students learned how to evaluate sources including ART (reading laterally) and Google tips & tricks. Students worked in groups using the ART strategy to evaluate three different websites.
  • 6th/7th Social Studies - Students worked in groups to complete their Ancient Egypt Document-Based Question (DBQ). Students analyzed primary and secondary sources to answer the DBQ question.
  • 7th Science - Students researched types of natural disasters using digital databases and created infographics using Canva. Using Nat Geo Kids and Britannica databases, the students gather information about their assigned natural disaster using a digital note taking tool and then organized their research into an infographic.

Lesson Spotlight

Algebra students engaged in two breakouts as part of their EOC review. The first breakout was a digital breakout that helped them review slope and inequalities. Students worked with partners to work through three problem sets in order to retrieve a three-digit code and breakout. The second breakout was a physical breakout using Breakout Edu lock boxes. Students worked with partners to solve two problem sets. Once students completed the problem sets, they used decoders to get the codes to tw o locks. The review was a big success and students enjoyed the friendly competition.

 

Collaborator

  • Social Studies Lunch & Learn - Librarian collaborated with ITS to host a PD on EduProtocols (Iron Chef and Cyber Sandwich) for all social studies teachers. The pair created lessons for each grade level that utilized each Eduprotocol.
  • Journalism - Librarian collaborated with the Journalism teacher to co-produce the Driscoll video announcements. The librarian coached the video news crew, edited stories, and recorded/edited all video morning announcements every week.
  • Family Engagement Lunch and Learn - Librarian collaborated with the Family Liaison and hosted a Parent/Student Lunch and Learn. The librarian presented library resources and discussed ways parents can help support reading at home.
  • ELAR/8th Grade Social Studies - Librarian collaborated with ELAR and Social Studies teachers to create a review activity for the Bill of Rights. Using Canva, the librarian created a bento box that required students to find a symbol that represented each of the10 amendments and write a justification statement.

Collaboration Spotlight

There was a year-long collaboration with the AVID teacher and students. There were several opportunities for students to visit the library and explore careers. The students learned about the Learning Express database, researched possible careers, wrote resumes and cover letters, and participated in a career fair. The lessons led to student inquiry and research for their future. The AVID teacher and librarian had a great working relationship and created this year-long career exploration proje ct together.

Campus Leader

  • Library Newsletter (Smore) - Librarian created and distributed a monthly newsletter that highlighted all library activities. The Smore newsletter focused on library programming and lessons.
  • TLA Conference - Librarian worked with two San Antonio area librarians and Region 20 to present at the annual Texas Library Conference. The presentation focused on digital resources for middle school students.
  • Library Services Guiding Coalition - Librarian presented to secondary librarians as part of the Guiding Coalition. The presentation focused on PLC basics and the implementation of PLC protocols.
  • Career Fair - In collaboration with the AVID teacher, the library hosted a career fair. Various professionals presented to AVID students about career options, writing a resume, interview skills, and planning for the future.
