• Welcome to Art 1!

My goal for this course is to have the students understand how to create artwork using the elements of art and principles of design by studying the history of art and putting their minds to practice. There are many different mediums that they will be taught how to use for their projects and some things we will do just for fun, such as painting pumpkins, and making ginger bread houses.  I hope that my passion for creating will be contagious and, in the end, I hope that each student will leave knowing that art is the visual depiction of how humans see life and to truly appreciate the art process and the people who create it!

There are a few competitions that they will be able to participate in, such as the Western art competition, Scholastic, Battle of Flowers Poster Design, V.A.S.E (our UIL competition), and Night Gallery.  I will always let them know a month in advance when competition dates are and give them plenty of time to work.  New competitions and contests always pop-up, so I’ll encourage everyone to sign up!

    2023-2024 Supply List

    • Highly encouraged but NOT reccomended: 9" x 12" Sketchbook
      • Students will use sketchbooks daily for warmups, thumbnails, brainstorming, and for visual journals.  It is crucial that they have one so that I am not supplying every student with 100 sheets of loose paper that can get lost, or ruined.

    2023-2024 $25 Supply Fee

Taking Art 1 at MacArthur means you will be exploring a plethora of mediums and forms of art.  Unfortunately, we can't always do the projects we want due to costs such as glass bead making, clay sculptures, airbrush painting, printmaking, and many more.  We are encouraging parents to help with this dilemma with an art supply fee.

Art is a craft, like many, which has a higher cost of supplies.  I buy tools, multiple canvas sizes, multiple types of paper, acrylic paint, watercolor paint, colored pencils, alcohol-based markers, rulers, tape, erasers, drawing pencils, pastels, glues, storage containers, brush cleaners, soaps, rags, paper towels, gel mediums, varnishes, paint thinners, and many more incredible art tools.  Please know that 1 box of clay is $25, which lasts between 5-7 students.  This art supply fee helps me get quality supplies just for your art student!  **Cash, or checks made out to MacArthur, are accepted.  If you have any questions or concerns about the supply fee, please email kthoma6@neisd.net
