The Bernard Harris Middle School Band Program consists of two advanced concert bands, an advanced jazz band, and a beginner band program where students can start if they have never played an instrument before. The program fosters student participation in smaller ensembles and emphasizes the importance of solo performance with an annual solo and ensemble competition. Competitive bands consistently receive superior and excellent ratings at contests - students enjoy attending annual UIL competitions as well as area and state festivals that offer great performance opportunities. In addition to competitive performances, our students perform annually at a San Antonio Spurs game and at various school events and pep rallies.
Our excellent program directly feeds the Mighty Maverick Marching Band of James Madison High School - we are so proud of all of our alumni who are now leaders in the Madison Band!
In May of 2017, the Honors Band was selected to perform in the YOSA Invitational at the Tobin Center in downtown San Antonio! This prestigious honor was only granted to 16 area bands and orchestras after a rigorous selection process which included an application and recording submission. We submitted the Honors Band Sweepstakes winning recording from UIL in April of 2016. Though many of the students, now in high school, who worked so hard for that performance will not get to be with us at the Tobin Center in May, we could not have done it without them and are so grateful for their hard work for our band!
A well rounded musical education includes camaraderie and friendships that playing music together can develop - we love to foster these relationships with opportunities for our students to connect, bond, and have fun together. Make sure to check our calendar for our next fun event. We kick off each year with both advanced and beginner camps that include music making, and plenty of fun, too!
