Mr. John McCusker

This is my 28th year teaching in Northeast but my 27th year on the LEE campus. I started as a Trinity intern at ISA, then obtained my first teaching position there the following year and I have been on the campus ever since, teaching AP US History, US History, AP US Government, US Government, AP Macroeconomics, Economics, Sociology, Psychology, Anthropology and other social studies electives. This is my fifteenth year at STEM, a place at which I feel very fortunate to be a teacher.  It is a great program.

I earned my B.A. in History from the University of Maryland and my M.A.T. from Trinity University. I have also completed an additional 18 hours of graduate work in US History to become Dual Credit certified for STEM; this is my tenth year teaching DC U.S. History for STEM, LEE and NESA students on the campus.

I am married and my wife and I have two children; a daughter Kathleen who is a graduate of United States Naval Academy and currently training as a Naval Flight Offcier at NAS Pensacola, and a second daughter Anne who is starting 9th grade at STEM this year. Both daughters know Mandarin since my wife Monica- now a U.S. citizen- is Chinese from Malaysia, a country to which we travel every couple years to visit family back there. Both daughters are thus quite accustomed to international travel with their passports impressed with a variety of different visas and stamps from the countries to which we have traveled over the years.

I am a combat veteran, having served two years in the U.S. Army in the 101st Airborne (Air Assault) Division, during which my unit was deployed during the 1st Gulf War. I like the outdoors, enjoying camping, hiking, hunting and fishing. As perhaps befits a history nerd I am both a numismatist and a philatelist; the U.S. Mint especially likes me.

Finally, I've always remembered the advice my 3rd grade teacher in England gave my folks at a parent night- "I promise to believe only half of what your child tells me about you, if you promise to believe only half of what your child tells you about me."
